Role of the Joker
The Joker is a powerful wildcard in Rummy 51 that can substitute for any missing card rank or suit in a combination. However, strategic constraints apply:
- Pure Sequence Restriction: A Joker cannot be used in the pure sequence required for your initial 51-point opening.
- One Joker Per Combination: Most rules allow at most one Joker per melded set or run.
- Point Value in Melds: Takes the point value of the card it represents.
Swapping Jokers from the Table
Once you have completed your initial meld, you can swap a Joker currently sitting in a table combination:
- Hold the exact card in your hand that the Joker is substituting for.
- On your turn, place your natural card into the table meld and take the Joker into your hand.
- You must immediately play the freed Joker into another valid combination or hold it for subsequent turns.
The 20-Point Penalty Danger
Holding a Joker when another player goes out carries a heavy penalty of 20 points per unmelded Joker in your hand. Never hoard Jokers too late into a round!
