Definition of a Pure Sequence
A Pure Sequence (also called a natural run or tierce franche) is a combination of three or more consecutive cards of the exact same suit created without using any Joker.
In Rummy 51, holding a pure sequence in your initial meld is mandatory. Even if your cards total 100 points, your opening laydown will be rejected if it lacks a pure sequence.

Valid Pure Sequences
- 5♥ - 6♥ - 7♥ (18 pts) — Pure sequence in Hearts
- 10♠ - J♠ - Q♠ - K♠ (40 pts) — 4-card Pure sequence in Spades
- A♦ - 2♦ - 3♦ (6 pts) — Low-Ace Pure sequence in Diamonds
Impure Sequences (Not Pure)
- 5♥ - [Joker] - 7♥ — Impure sequence (uses Joker)
- 8♣ - 8♠ - 8♦ — Set / Group (not a sequence)
Strategic Importance
Because pure sequences require natural matching cards, prioritizing them in your hand during early draws is the single most effective strategy for opening quickly in Rummy 51.
